HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO-
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger (CONAN THE BARBARIAN, CONAN THE DESTROYER, THE TERMINATOR movies, PREDATOR, THE RUNNING MAN, TOTAL RECALL, END OF DAYS, THE 6TH DAY) is 56. Arnold shares July birthdays with his fellow actor from TOTAL RECALL, Ronny Cox, and director of the same film, Paul Verhoeven. He also shares a July birthday with his director from END OF DAYS, Peter Hyams, and his producer from PREDATOR Joel Silver.
Actor Hilary Swank (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK...AGAIN, KOUNTERFEIT, THE GIFT, INSOMNIA, THE CORE) is 29.
As for this next birthday boy: Derivitive? Cheap? Ridiculous? You could say that about all of his movies and come up with some modifying epithets, but at least he's never boring. Bruno has created some of the most wild if totally incomprehensible movies of anyone ever. Imagine the pitch sessions: "People like nuns and people like movies about prison. So let's make a movie about nuns in prison! It will be a porno horror film!" Whew! Happy birthday to
Director Bruno Mattei (S.S. EXTERMINATION LOVE CAMP, SS GIRLS, L' ALTRO INFERNO, PORNO HOLOCAUST, THE TRUE STORY OF THE NUN OF MONZA, HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD, CAGED WOMEN, RATS, GLI OCCHI DENTRO, CANNIBAL WORLD, SNUFF TRAP) is 73. Check out his many aliases at imdb.com.

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS
Long time visitors to feoamante.com know of my many trials and tribulations with conventions around the US. Today is no different. This weekend is the San Diego Comic Convention and there is no genre convention bigger (over 70,000 visitors last year). Actor Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD, FROM BEYOND, THE DENTIST, DAWN OF THE DEAD [2004], THE DEVIL'S REJECTS) and I head out to the San Diego Comic-Con.

The plan:
Step one: We miss our train. Step two: We arrive early in the morning. Step three: we have to wake up in less than 6 hours to do the first day of the convention. Its a good plan! It's: THE PLAN!

When I got into the Los Angeles Railway Union Station, Ken was waiting for me at one of the hall dining tables. As always, he was scribbling notes. Possibly on Big Chief note paper, I'm not sure. He invited me to sit down as we had some time before the train left. I bought a chili dog because, at Union Station, the chili is homemade and their chili dogs are the best on the west coast. While I'm eating, Ken is talking. While Ken is talking, the station speakers erupt to say, "Last call for train (X) leaving for San Diego!"

LAST CALL? Where was the first call?

Ken starts gathering his stuff, saying, "Well, I guess we'd better go."

Our train was leaving on track 10. Now the thing about the Union Station is, its really damn long. So long that they have glorified golf carts to cart people to and fro - but they only have so many of these and try to save them for the handicapped folks. Possibly those with a handicap of 10.

THIS IS THE UNION STATION HAUL AS SEEN FROM TRACK 4 LOOKING BACK TOWARD 1! THIS IS JUST THE HALFWAY POINT!

So Ken and I have to suddenly grab all of our luggage and make our way down to track 10 ramp. It's a fair haul just to get to track one, but we'll be leaving 1 in our dust. Then up the ramp and down to our train. We make our way toward track 10 to find a veritable dearth of people waiting far, far down at the very end where track 10 wing opens to the right. We'll be the very last people on board and I'm hoping we'll be able to find a seat as Amtrak sells tickets right up to standing room only without prior warning. They do this as a surprise, betting that people just love surprises.

We get up there and up the ramp. No train.Maybe we misheard. Maybe they said Track 11? We go back down the ramp and into the station. "Pardon us friendly train porter, where is train leaving for San Diego?"

"It hasn't arrived yet.

"Ken: "Oh, running late, eh?"

Feo: "That can't be right."

Porter: "It's on time. It will arrive at 10:00pm."

Ken: "What about the 7:30 train to San Diego?"

Porter: "It's on time too, and it left at 7:30. It's 7:40 right now."

Ken: "Uh (teetering on mild despair)... man. When will the next train arrive in San Diego?"

Porter: "Some time tomorrow morning."

KEN COGITATES

Ken bloomed into such sudden anger that I thought he'd actually try and demand that the station call the train back. "We missed our train? WE MISSED OUR TRAIN? HOW COULD WE MISS OUR TRAIN?" I laughed because the situation couldn't be more comical, but that's just me.

Ken: "You think this is funny, Feo?"

Feo: "Sorry Ken: but this is good material! HA!"

Ken doesn't always enjoy travelling with a former stand-up comic and this was one of those times. I prepared to haul my butt back down the long passageway into the main body of the station, but Ken stood there, not ready to accept the truth. We started the long walk back. By the time we got to track 5, Ken asked me to stop while he thought our situation through a little more. He stood there, trying to formulate a plan. A plan! A plan! Maybe if we...well, we could... But no, we missed our train. Now we wouldn't arrive at 8:35. We'd arrive at 12:50am the next morning! The folks who promised to wait and pick us up would have to wait until tomorrow morning, and wake up early (or not sleep at all) just to do us a favor and pick us up. And we'd have to get up later that morning to work the largest genre convention in the known universe!

So, the trip started well.

GEORGE ROMERO: The godfather of zombies! This is a man who has made his career creating new zombie fans while pleasing the old - but has actually done many types of characters in his films. He's worked with amazing people, on great projects, and is one of the men responsible for bringing horror to the heights it has achieved...

JEFF IS BACK, WITHOUT RHYME
In the most ingenious and provocative thriller yet from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Jeffery Deaver (THE BONE COLLECTOR), a conscience-plagued mobster turned government hitman struggles to find his moral compass amid rampant treachery and betrayal in 1936 Berlin.

Paul Schumann, a German American living in New York City in 1936, is a mobster hitman known as much for his brilliant tactics as for taking only "righteous" assignments. But then Paul gets caught. And the arresting officer offers him a stark choice: prison or covert government service. Paul is asked to pose as a journalist covering the summer Olympics taking place in Berlin. He's to hunt down and kill Reinhard Ernst - the ruthless architect of Hitler's clandestine rearmament. If successful, Paul will be pardoned and given the financial means to go legit; if he refuses the job, his fate will be Sing Sing and the electric chair.

Paul travels to Germany, takes a room in a boardinghouse near the Tiergarten - the huge park in central Berlin but also, literally, the GARDEN OF BEASTS - and begins his hunt. In classic Deaver fashion, the next forty-eight hours are a feverish cat-and-mouse chase, as Paul stalks Ernst through Berlin while a dogged Berlin police officer and the entire Third Reich apparatus search frantically for the American.

GARDEN OF BEASTS is packed with fascinating period detail and features a cast of perfectly realized locals, Olympic athletes and senior Nazi officials - some real, some fictional. With hairpin plot twists, the reigning "master of ticking-bomb suspense" (People) plumbs the nerve-jangling paranoia of prewar Berlin and steers the story to a breathtaking and wholly unpredictable ending.

Actor Vin Diesel (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, BOILER ROOM, PITCH BLACK, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK) is 37.

SATAN GONE WILD!
Robert Steven Rhine is the frenetic mad man behind one of the most foul pieces of inspired filth to ever crawl the bleeding edge between unforgivable crap and comedic genius. I first came on to this weirdo when I read SATAN'S POWDER ROOM #1: The first comic book in Rhine's successful series, has sold out. Instead of blowing his wad with the first one and sinking evermore, Steven assembled some of the best comic artists in the biz and released, CHICKEN SOUP FOR SATAN #1. That one is quickly selling out but a few copies will still be available at Dark Delicacies for purchase on Saturday. That's THIS SATURDAY JULY 17th from 2-4 p.m.
at DARK DELICACIES BOOKSTORE
4213 W. Burbank Blvd.
Burbank, CA USA 91505

The reason for Steven's appearance is the release of his new SATAN GONE WILD #1 (All of Steven's comics are number 1, it seems, the lucre grubbing bastard!) SATAN GONE WILD features five 'humorrific' new tales written by the 'Grin Reaper' himself, ROBERT STEVEN RHINE, and features amazing artwork by some of the top names in the business:
HILARY BARTA (Hellboy Junior, Marvel Legends: Wolverine, Spider-Man, Superman: The Dark Side, Splash Brannigan);
cover by FRANK FORTE (Hex of the Wicked Witch, Vampire Verses);
KEVIN COLDEN (House of Twelve Comics, Manual Comics' "Mauled" series and BIGnews, "Wally Pfeiffer"), NENAD GUCUNJA ("Vortex of Hell") and
ALEKSANDAR SOTIROVSKI (Book illustrator: The Lord Of The Rings" I-III).

Here are a few more upcoming R.S. RHINE events:

July 21st - 25th - COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL SAN DIEGO (IP PAVILION - ASYLUM PRESS/FRANKENRHINE PRODUCTIONS BOOTH)

September 9th - FRIGHT NIGHT in North Hollywood will feature R.S. Rhine. They will also screen R.S. Rhine's: "Vinnie and Angela's Beauty Salon & Funeral Parlor" and the animated "SICKCOM" (Which was purchased by Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation.") "Fright Night is located at CIA (California Institute of Abnormalarts) 11334 Burbank Blvd, in North Hollywood California. Doors open at 8:30pm to 2am. Click here for flyer and more info

October 23-24th - SPOOKY CON in NY will be welcoming R.S. Rhine as a special guest at the horrific event.

ALIEN VS PREDATOR
WHOEVER WINS, WE LOSE, might be a pretty apropos slogan if by "We" 20th Century Fox means the audience. ALIEN 3 and ALIEN RESURRECTION both enjoyed great opening weekends, only to thud like a lead belch the following weekends. The reason being is that they both sucked BIG time. The only thing that got them in high numbers from the start was the great audience anticipation generated by ALIEN and ALIENS. But neither Ridley Scott or James Cameron have been invited back. Instead, 20th Century Fox has decided to pursue their losing streak by hiring Paul W.S. Anderson (MORTAL COMBAT, EVENT HORIZON, SOLDIER, RESIDENT EVIL) to write and direct it. Whatever the movie is, it's entirely on Paul's shoulders.

With only a month left before opening day, ALIEN vs PREDATOR posters are as lifeless as the preview trailer. The preview features some extreme close-ups of nothing in particular - no action - and sound effects. Only a month left before the movie opens and 20th Century Fox is generating all the heat of a cold front. That is usually a bad signal

Check out the AvP trailer for yourself.

WITCHOUSE 3: Demon Fire

TEMPE DVD BRINGS CULT APPEAL TO KC SALES WITH NEW PARTNERSHIP
Launched in January 2002, Tempe DVD has become known as a leader in entertaining, value-added horror and cult releases among its many fans. Independent producer/director J.R. Bookwalter (THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, WITCHOUSE 2: BLOOD COVEN) chose to launch his own DVD label rather than licensing his work to outsiders and being at the mercy of their often-feeble marketing and distribution efforts. This “anti-distributor” approach has also become appealing to other like-minded producers seeking a home for work dismissed or misunderstood by traditional labels. The company’s flagship release — the fully-loaded DVD of Bookwalter’s own WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE — was praised highly by one reviewer as “easily among the most impressive special editions ever assembled for a horror movie…I can't recall a company of any size roaring out of the gates with a disc comparable to this.” Another critic touted the fledgling label as the “Criterion of direct-to-video features.”

In its sophomore year, Tempe DVD branched out with two new labels: Bad Movie Police, a home for admittedly cheesy movies that are given a riotous MST3K-esque treatment by two buxom cops whose mission is to stamp out “cine-terrorism,” and Splatter Rampage, devoted to in-your-face horror-comedies more concerned with body count than dramatic content. The Tempe catalog will reach 25 releases by the end of 2004, featuring aggressive SRPs starting at $9.99 and collectible multi-packs aimed at budget-conscious consumers.

This year’s lineup has thus far included a 10th Anniversary Special Edition of Bookwalter’s 1994 horror classic OZONE, an all-new documentary on ten B-movie actresses called SOMETHING TO SCREAM ABOUT and the home video debut of the 1992 drama EDDIE PRESLEY, which marked the company’s first 2-Disc Special Edition. The film boasts an impressive lineup of genre celebrities headlined by Duane Whitaker (PULP FICTION) as well as cameos from KILL BILL director Quentin Tarantino and BUBBA HO-TEP star Bruce Campbell.

Looking to further expand its horizons, Tempe has just inked an exclusive distribution agreement with Westlake Village, California-based KC Sales, likewise a fast-growing company that until now hasn’t been particularly active with horror and cult titles. Bookwalter looks forward to changing all that, and Tempe will shortly expand its reach to Canada as well.

Upcoming releases include the Canadian thriller THE BONESETTER (Aug. 31, prebook Aug. 6), the 1990 cult oddity GHOUL SCHOOL (Sept. 28, prebook Aug. 31) featuring early appearances by Ivan Sergei (TV’s JACK & JILL and CROSSING JORDAN) as well as former Howard Stern sidekick Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling and the zany BAD MOVIE POLICE CASE #3: HUMANOIDS FROM ATLANTIS (Oct. 26, prebook Sept. 28). Tempe is also ready with fresh acquisitions for 2005 including the epic ZOMBIE PLANET and will kick off the new year with a remastered Special Edition of Bookwalter’s 1996 sci-fi actioner POLYMORPH.

LATE BREAKING NEWS FROM C.K.L.
What is a three-lobed brain? Chimera, Korn and Lewis invented one back in the 1990's and dubbed it a Tricephallic brain. The term refers to a story constructed by three writing brains in intimate collaboration.

In CHIM+HIM, the new Cyber Pulp release, Oxford-based author Hertzan Chimera collaborates with seven of the most stunning authors writing today: Simon Logan, Mark McLaughlin, Vincent W Sakowski, Greg Wharton, John Edward Lawson, MF Korn and DF Lewis.

Hertzan Chimera loves to collaborate with other writers - it's a sort of fetish, a literary perversion. Over the last fourteen years, he has collaborated with numerous male and female writers online and in print.

In his fifth book release this year, Hertzan Chimera (author of novels SZMONHFU and UNITED STATES, collections ANIMAL INSTINCTS and BFGS) shows how traditional 3-act narrative quivers in the shadow of the twisted maneuvres of combatative fiction, mano a mano.

Earlier this year, Hertzan Chimera brought out his gut-wrenching book of female collaboration CHIM+HER, containing 24 collaborative stories with Charlee Jacob, Alex Severin, Destiny West, Amy Grech, Queenie Tirone, Brutal Dreamer, Dawn Andrews and Christina Sng.

CHIM+HIM is a man thing; a testosterone dripping book that heaves and roars like some crazed beast. Chim+Him is a unique vision formed from many minds that elevates the art of literary collaboration to its rightful place at the top of the creative pile. All the horrors of modern living are explored in this holocaust of words, this nightmare of visuals, this illness. Never has such shared pain made it intact to the printed page.

Collaboration is the true undiscovered country where opulent narrative lives and grows and is sometimes destroyed, reborn, mutated into a new monster in the mind of the other; the collaborator.

Chim+Him is about black-humour in a world of grease-painted clowns, it's about life, it's definitely about death, it's definitely about the things you shouldn't talk about, the crazy dangerous places you shouldn't go. It's about literal freedom. It's about the new world beyond narrative, into the twisted minds of the collaborators themselves.

By reading Chim+Him, you are drinking the raw, blended brainjuice of Chimera, Lewis, Korn, McLaughlin, Wharton, Sakowski, Lawson and Logan - this is the ultimate sacrifice of persona, the pure blood from stone.

There are 25 collaborative stories in this Chim+Him, plus a bumper batch of 9 of the infamous Tricephallic collaborations of Chimera, Korn and Lewis. No other book brings their Tricephallic collection together.

What could be more intimate than a three lobed brain?

CHIM+HIM will be available in ebook, cd and TRADE PAPERBACK from Cyber Pulp books of Houston on July 4th in the States.

SHAMUS AWARDS NOMINEES

Honoring excellence in the private eye writing tradition, the Private Eye Writers of America (PWA) will once again offer its Shamus Awards. Only books and short stories first published in 2003 were eligible for consideration, and in each work considered, the main character must be a person paid for investigative work but not employed by a unit of government. That means books and stories about private investigators (whether licensed or unlicensed), lawyers, and/or reporters who do their own legwork, and other hired agents are eligible while works centering on law enforcement officers or amateur sleuths are not.

space. This means that there isn’t a re-direct anymore and you can reach the site directly through shadow-writer.co.uk so if anyone has links, please could you check them.

Recent news includes: Paul’s interview for the Assembly of Rogue documentary DVD alongside Ramsey Campbell, Mark Morris, Graham Joyce, Tim Lebbon, Simon Clark and others; his new novella SIGNS OF LIFE which is being introduced by Stephen Gallagher, news about his Hellraiser project, a graphic adaptation of THE TORTURER and various anthology appearances. In forthcoming news sections there will include details about interviews Paul has conducted with some of the big names in the genre and the British Fantasy Society Calendar 2005 which he is co-editing.

Horror and Gore fans are well aware of Director Herschell Gordon Lewis (BLOOD FEAST, MONSTERS A-GO GO, A TASTE OF BLOOD, THE GRUESOME TWOSOME, THE WIZARD OF GORE, THE GORE GORE GIRLS) is reknown for making crappy movies with lots of gore and nudity. The man has no apologies and has inspired too many to care about your opinion. Still, his opinion is highly regarded among Direct Marketers and this article is a hoot! Read about Herschell's ever-growing desperation in buying coffee online.

Check out Not So Good to the Last Drop.

Also: Shooting has wrapped on 2001 MANIACS, the remake to Lewis' classic. 2001 MANIACS stars Robert Englund (DEAD AND BURIED) and is produced by Eli Roth (CABIN FEVER).

SPIDER-MAN 2 SETS NEW RECORDS
Holy crap! According to the Hollywood Reporter, SPIDER-MAN 2 racked up $180.1 million dollars in its first week! With the average 50% gross going to the theaters, that's $90+ million dollars for the movie company in just five days. Now Sony Pictures needs only three more weeks like this one to break even - the budget of the movie being $200 freaking million! It can happen.

Christ! If a movie about Christ getting three kinds of shit beat out of him can stay at number one for 3 weeks, what's to stop a movie about a shy kid who shoots sticky white goo out of his body over guilt association with his Uncle? Naturally there are a number of Horror fans who will puff out their chest a little more over this news (the box office news, not the goo part - that's a different kind of fan). The biggest money makers in Hollywood franchises all come from Horror Thriller movies or Horror Thriller directors.

SPIDERMAN director Sam Raimi got his start making EVIL DEAD, EVIL DEAD 2, DARKMAN, ARMY OF DARKNESS, and THE GIFT.
LORD OF THE RINGS director Peter Jackson got his start making BAD TASTE, MEET THE FEEBLES, DEAD ALIVE, HEAVENLY CREATURES, and THE FRIGHTENERS.
And of course, the Warchowski Bros. made THE MATRIX movies. There hasn't been this much audience excitement in movies and their sequels since James Cameron helmed ALIENS and the first two TERMINATOR movies.

DE-BOR-AH! COME OUT TO PLA-YAY!
Feoamante.com Exclusive*:

Okay, so maybe Rob Zombie didn't say that exactly when Deborah Van Valkenburgh (THE WARRIORS, STREETS OF FIRE, RAMPAGE, FIRESTARTER 2) won the role of Casey (K.C.?), in THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. But it sure as hell would have been going through my mind. Casey is one of Pimp Charlie Altamont's 'ladies' in the HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES sequel.

Check out the set photos of THE DEVIL'S REJECTS at kenforee.us.

*Yeah, exclusive my butt! Does that even have meaning in magazine and Internet land where actors give exclusive interviews every freaking week? Nobody granted me exclusive nothin'! I just got the word out on Deborah playing Casey in THE DEVIL'S REJECTS before anyone else. So Nyahh! Now watch somebody with an obscure pop-up-ad tripod.com movie site jump my claim!
