GET THEE TO FRAMINGHAM!

On Friday evening, October 29th, I will be participating in a Halloween book-signing event in Framingham, Massachusetts. The event, which takes place starting at 7:30 PM, will be at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers, One Worcester Road (Route 9), Framingham, MA 01701. I am very honored to be participating in a 'Halloween Themed' panel discussion with some of horror's most notable authors:

Strangewood
STRANGEWOOD

1. CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN: Chris is the award-winning, L.A. Times bestselling author of such novels as The Ferryman, Strangewood, The Gathering Dark, Of Saints and Shadows, Prowlers, and the Body of Evidence series of teen thrillers, several of which have been listed among the Best Books for Young Readers by the American Library Association and the New York Public Library. Golden has also written or co-written a great many books and comic books related to the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, as well as the script for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer video game for Microsoft Xbox, which he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Tom Sniegoski. His other comic book work includes stories featuring such characters as Batman, Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Crow, and Hellboy, among many others.

Bedbugs
BEDBUGS

2. RICK HAUTALA: Rick has had more than twenty books published. There's the million copy, international best-seller Nightstone, as well as Twilight Time, Little Brothers, Beyond the Shroud, Cold Whisper, and Impulse. He's also written in the neighborhood of fifty short stories, which have appeared in national and international anthologies and magazines. Bedbugs, his first short story collection, was published by CD Publication in 2000 (and selected by Barnes and Noble as one of the distinguished horror books of that year). It will be followed up soon by another collection, Occasional Demons. Most recently, his novel Poltergeist: The Legacy - The Hidden Saint (Berkley/Putnam) was published in November, 1999, and the novel The White Room (Berkley/Putnam) written under the pseudonym A.J. Matthews, was published in June, 2001. He's working on a new novel titled Looking Glass (another A.J. Matthews book), a novella titled Cold River, and (with Christopher Golden), a prequel to the movie Underworld.

The Fallen
THE FALLEN

3. THOMAS SNIEGOSKI: Tom is a novelist, comic book writer and pop culture journalist. His newest works include the original juvenile fantasy series OutCast and the grown-up fantasy series The Menagerie, both of which are collaborative efforts with Christopher Golden. His other fiction works include a conspiracy thriller called Force Majeure, also with Golden, and his own unique quartet of supernatural teen thrillers called The Fallen. He has written dozens of comics, including Batman Chronicles #22 and Wolverine/Punisher: Revelation and the Hellboy-inspired three issue mini-series, B.P.R.D: The Hollow Earth was co-written with Christopher Golden and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Tom has been working in the comic book field for ten years, for companies as diverse as Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Acclaim, Harris, Crusade, Caliber, Spiderbaby, London Night, and most recently, Cartoon Books.

For more details on the event, please call 508-628-5567. Come by if you are in the area!

On some unrelated news, my novel SLEEPWALKER is scheduled to be released at the end of October in Limited Edition hardcover from Delirium Books. There will be only 250 copies published. All will be
signed and numbered. As of now, there are approximately 50 copies remaining. If you have not ordered your copy yet, do so now! Once these are gone, booksellers will be raising their prices. It's happened with my first collection, which have been going for well over $100 on EBAY.

Deep in the Darkness
DEEP IN THE DARKNESS

Remember, THE DEMONOLOGIST, my next novel from Leisure, will be released in MAY 2005. The cover art is being worked on now. I'll make an announcement once that is released. As well, my next announcement will contain some very big news about my most recently released novel, DEEP IN THE DARKNESS, which, after four months, is still sitting at the number 1 spot on Amazon.com as Leisure Books's bestselling horror title. It's also currently Leisure's #2 overall selling title on Amazon (as of today, out of over 3000 titles!).

JOHN WEAGLY NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL FICTION AWARD
John Weagly has been nominated for the Norumbega Fiction award for his short story collection, THE UNDERTOW OF SMALL TOWN DREAMS (published by Twilight Tales Publications). He is nominated for the Hamlin Award for Best Novella/Short Story Collection.

The Norumbega Fiction Awards are an annual literary competition founded by students at the University of Maine to recognize the work of unpublished writers, self-published writers, and small-press publishers. Their idea is to establish a prestigious award that gives cash prizes and plaques to talented writers who are under-represented in mainstream literary circles. The competition is held once a year and the winners are based on submissions nominated by writers and independent publishers. All nominations are judged equally on the following criteria: originality, strength of prose, strength of story, thematic approach, character development and overall quality as a work of literature. The awards are sponsored in full by Media Darlings Literature, Art & Sound. “Norumbega” is the name of the mythical city of gold believed to be near modern-day Bangor, Maine.

Weagly’s mixed genre collection, THE UNDERTOW OF SMALL TOWN DREAMS, chronicles the life and times of Currie Valley, a hazy little town that sits on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi. It’s a quiet place, filled with ex-wrestlers, a bandit dreaming of glory and fame, a mistreated werewolf and love in a meteor shower.

Weagly has had over thirty stage-plays produced by a variety of theaters across the country and his short fiction has frequently been published in national anthologies and specialty magazines, in both the mystery and horror genres. He has won several writing contests, and his short story, “Shark Infested Pudding,” was nominated for a Derringer Award for best short-short mystery of 2002.

Norumbega Fiction Awards are given for Best Novel, Best Novella/Short Story Collection and Best Short Story. There is also a Jury Prize for Outstanding Fiction. Winners for this year’s awards will be announced October 1.

For more information about the Norumbega Fiction Awards, go to www.mediadarlings.org.

From Paula Guran
YEAH, SURE, A UNIVERSAL HORROR CHANNEL?

For those of you who picked up on the "The Hollywood Reporter's" story speculating that NBC Universal is mulling a new cable channel devoted to horror-themed programming - GET A GRIP ON REALITY! Science Fiction Weekly and others picked up the LA trade paper story that quoted anonymous sources reporting that a horror network would be the first in-house launch since NBC acquired Vivendi Universal Entertainment, which includes USA Network and SCI FI Channel. Adding to the credibility is NBC Universal's control of Universal Pictures' library of classic horror films and characters, including Dracula, Wolfman, and Frankenstein's monster (which USA is reviving for a limited series produced by Dean Koontz and Martin Scorsese this fall). NBC Universal declined to comment on the speculation.

If the "Reporter or SFW had some BETTER anonymous sources (like we do) they
would know:
(1) It would be years before this could become a reality.
(2) The story is the result of one division leaking out an idea that would require their own sales group to sever contracts with other outlets currently running their library films.
(3) The idea stems from the desire to create a purpose for their TRIO network, which is currently flailing about without an identity or cohesive programming.
(4) Anyone who has much experience with Universal and the individuals involved would probably give the entire idea about as much chance as...well, let us say they'd wish them a big pile of luck.

A Walk on the Darkside
A WALK ON THE DARKSIDE

From Michael Laimo
HEY YOU, TAKE A WALK ON THE DARKSIDE

This month marks the release of the anthology, A WALK ON THE DARKSIDE, which contains my 7000 word short story, "Something In The Air". A WALK ON THE DARKSIDE is the third volume in the Bram Stoker Award Winning "Darkside' series, edited by John Pelan. This third volume, coined as "21 All New Stories From Modern Horror's Most Daring Voices", contains fiction from many great writers, including Brian Hodge, Brian Keene, Brian Hopkins (am I seeing trend here?), Lee Thomas, Mike Oliveri, Tim Lebbon, Tom Piccirilli, Mehitobel Wilson, and many others. This book was published by ROC Books in mass market paperback, and is available in bookstores everywhere.

On another note, my tale "End Of The Line" is currently available in the anthology SHIVERS 3, available from CD Publications. Here you will find tales from Thomas F. Monteleone, F. Paul Wilson, John Maclay, Douglas Clegg, Tom Piccirilli, and many others.

DEEP IN THE DARKNESS is still, after three months, Leisure Books's bestselling horror title on Amazon.com. Thank you very much for your continued support!

The release date for SLEEPWALKER has been pushed back to November 1st. This is being done in an effort to create proper promotion for it. You'll find an excerpt in the forthcoming issue of BLACK OCTOBER MAGAZINE, due out next month.

By Tom Piccirilli
FROM TOM PICCIRILLI'S EPITAPH
I recently learned that the amazing Caniglia will be doing the cover art for my next novel for Bantam NOVEMBER MOURNS, due out next May. Caniglia is one of the absolute best artists working in the speculative field and a great person to work with. I can't tell you all how delighted I am that he'll be making his first leap into mass market doing this cover.

The novel deals with an ex-con who returns home to his backwoods mountain moonshine running town and finds his sister has died under strange circumstances on a dirt road supposedly haunted. He investigates and runs into plenty of oddball characters including a church of snake-handlers, a dwarf granny lady, ill children, a bunch of brain damaged moonshine swillers, ghosts of one sort or another, and Hellfire Christ. Of course you'll be the first to get ordering info as soon as it becomes available.

I've sold a new collection of poetry to Fairwood Press (Patrick & Honna Swenson, the great folks who bring us Talebones) who are now breaking into the horror publishing field as well. They have a new subsidy line Darkwood Press whose first offering will be WAITING MY TURN TO GO UNDER THE KNIFE, a collection of 60 of my darkest poems that have never been collected before. Artwork by Caniglia (told you I love him!) with an introduction by TM Wright. You'll find two of them down below (cover your eyes, kids), made available only to the members of this list. I'll also be putting together a contest for you folks. Another chance to win free stuff! More info to follow.

From the jacket:
"In 2000, Tom Piccirilli won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Poetry with his collection A Student of Hell. In 2002, Piccirilli raised the bar with his second collection, This Cape is Red Because I've Been Bleeding.

"Now, in 2004, Piccirilli outdoes himself with his most personal poetry collection to date. Waiting My Turn To Go Under the Knife confronts us with some of our greatest fears. Piccirilli stabs and twists the knife deep so that we feel the emotion and power of every poem.

"This collection features exquisite artwork by Caniglia, who has illustrated Piccirilli's work several times before. This signed and numbered hardcover has been limited to 250 copies."

I'll be a guest at the HORRORFIND PHOENIX convention over Halloween weekend. If you're in attendance, step up and say hello to me and Michelle.

I recently turned in the second anthology I've edited for Cemetery Dance. This one is entitled MIDNIGHT PREMIERE, and the theme of the antho deals with movies, actors, Hollywood, and ultra bizarre f/x. Contributors include Jack Ketchum, Gary Braunbeck, John Shirley, Al Sarrantonio, T.M. Wright, Tom Moneteleone, Mick Garris, Ed Gorman, Mark McLaughlin & Kyra Schon, Mike McCarty & Linnea Quigley, Del Howison & William Smith, Patrick Lussier, Carl Dupre, Gerard Houarner, Brian Hodge, Ray Garton, and Lisa Morton & Richard Grove.

I'm currently at work on a new novel entitled HEADSTONE CITY, which will be my third book for Bantam. It's a little too early to give a story description, outside of the fact that it deals with a psychic mobster and his childhood friend who are on a collision course. Brooklyn cemeteries, ghosts, hitmen, and a shotgun-wielding grandma all come into play.
