SATAN AT FANGORIA
Tony Timpone talks to Robert S. Rhine about his upcoming graphics collection SATAN'S 3 RING CIRCUS OF HELL. Robert talks about the weirdness of the comics industry and how some comic shops will carry violent "hardcore XXX splatter comics" but won't touch a funny book that has Satan on the cover. Check out the full article at

HORROR TOONS
Pick a monster! Any monster will do! Hell, you can even create wild woolly never-before-seen monsters like Monster.com did! Oh, you lack any talent or creativity? Okay then, just keep picking from the Unversal Pictures stable of monsters then.

On a totally unrelated note, here is today's Horror Toon from political cartoonist, Henry Payne, of The Detroit News.

HAPPY HORROR MYSTERY BIRTHDAYS TO -
Okay, the fact is that I have many adult friends who think that the old Scooby-Doo cartoons were nothing more than product marketed unmitigated crap. At the same time, and with a hint of shame, they'll also admit that, as kids, the damn cartoon babysat them for a up to a good hour or so every Saturday morning. No doubt, in another 20 years, there will be a world famous paleontologist who'll fess up to being influenced by Barney the Purple Dinosaur as a baby. So with so many contemporary Horror and Mystery fans and writers acknowledging early inspiration from the cartoon, I'd be remiss to leave it out of the loop.

One other, particularly important thing about Scooby Doo and that's this: The entire show was based upon the idea that there really weren't any ghosts, monsters, or other supernatural entities. If you used your head and looked deep enough, you'd find an unsavory character behind the mystery; looking to take criminal advantage of people ("Yeah, and I would have gotten away with it too: If it wasn't for you rotten kids!"). A solid life lesson well taught to the young masses.

So if you were a childhood fan of Scooby Doo, maybe you really shouldn't feel that bad about it. And while we're on the subject, here is a Happy Birthday to the voice of Scooby's best pal, the perpetually frightened Shaggy.
Voice actor Casey Kasem (Norville "Shaggy" Rogers of various SCOOBY DOO cartoons since the beginning in 1969) is 73.

WOMEN IN HORROR
The "Women In Horror" Panel at the World Horror Convention 2005, held this year in New York City, gave female horror authors a chance to talk about the business from their points of view, which in many ways is no different from that of male horror writers but in other ways presents unique challenges, such as facing the dreaded question -
"Why do you write such things? You look so nice!"
Or facing the pseudo-compliment, "You write just like a man!"

Many of the panel members belong to an organization of women horror writers called "Persephone." "Persephone" seeks to promote promote the professional education and advancement of women writers of the dark literary arts, to raise the level of awareness of women's past and current contribution to the field, to provide support, camaraderie, and information about the art and business of writing, and to establish a unified voice against discrimination and inequities in the treatment of female authors of dark fiction/non-fiction.

Elizabeth Massie is the author of The Fear Report, The Little Magenta Book of Mean Stories, Sineater, Welcome Back to the Night, Wire Mesh Mothers, Dark Shadows: Dreams of the Dark,
The Great Chicago Fire 1871, Shadow Dreams, 1609: Winter of the Dead, and more. Visit her at ElizabethMassie.com.

THE DEMON IS OUT!

I am very pleased to announce that my new novel, THE DEMONOLOGIST, has been published. Leisure Book Club members have begun receiving their copies, and so far the feedback has been refreshing. Thanks to all of you that out it on the top of your to-be-read piles. I am grateful!

The book should start showing up in the stores this week, next week at the latest. My novel DEEP IN THE DARKNESS (recently nominated for the Bram Stoker Award) has done quite well, and I am hoping that THE DEMONOLOGIST can follow in its footsteps.

I do hope you enjoy reading THE DEMONOLOGIST. This is quite simply the most horrific, visceral piece of fiction I have ever written. Feel free to drop me a note at Michael@Laimo.com with your thoughts on it after you've finished reading it. I'd love to hear from you!

Also...for those of you in the Long Island area, I will be signing books at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Melville, NY, on Thursday May 19th, and 7:30 PM. The address and phone number for the store is:

SCARE TACTICS
Its hard for the average writer to run a well funded scare campaign - the better to drum up sales for his or her book. But when you're a branch of the government, you just have to do something with all of that extra tax money! It would be frivolous to do something as mad as, say, give it back!

So the the United States Center for Disease Control, led by Julie Gerberding, decided a few years ago to completely invent - out of whole cloth - the scare tactic that an overwhelming number of Americans are dangerously obese (truth is, we aren't); that about 400,000 Americans die from obesity related illness every year (An average 2 million Americans die every year from everything!), and now, even with the latest news that the CDC's own latest study (a mutiny of sorts led by real researchers) shows that they purposefully lied to the public, they refuse to back down. They are ignoring their own study!

The truth is, while Americans are more overweight than ever before (and there is a difference between merely overweight and obese), we are also living longer than ever - although we're probably not looking any better doing it.

FINAL DESTINATION FOR THE THIRD TIME
The team behind the original Final Destination - Writer/ Director James Wong (X-FILES, FINAL DESTINATION, THE ONE) and writer Glen Morgan (X-FILES [TV], FINAL DESTINATION, WILLARD) - are reunited for FINAL DESTINATION 3, now in production. The story begins six years after the events of the first film, when high school senior Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has a premonition of a fatal amusement park accident. When the premonition proves true, those who survive the accident are forced to deal with the repercussions of escaping their fate. But fate is not so easily thwarted, and as Wendy and Kevin (Ryan Merriman) desperately try to interpret the clues that might save lives, their friends meet fantastically gruesome ends one-by-one.

The film is currently scheduled for an in-your-face, 2006 release. Why in your face? Because it will be a 3D movie!

PHANS REJOICE!
New Line Cinema has struck a deal with filmmaker Don Coscarelli to bring a new version of his cult horror film PHANTASM to the big screen. Coscarelli will produce the remake of the classic film, which will give a 21st century upgrade to the original 1979 film. Phantasm revolves around the evil "Tall Man" who moves from small town to small town, turning the local dead into slaves as he prepares for an otherworldly invasion.

STILL WAITING FOR VOODOO TO WORK ITS MAGIC
Horror Writer, Tamara Thorne's Hauntster: Anomalies with Attitude is up and running! You can read about Tamara's experiences with things that go bump in the night. You might recognize some novel inspiration in these true tales. Melanie Billings supplies interviews and all the other things she does so well (Except for the voodoo. She had to retire from poppet-pinning after she accidentally put her own back out instead of Michael Jackson's. And that thing with Tom Delay kind of backfired too.)

Melanie has also valiantly updated the Weird Files on Grimm Acres, even as the site waits for its facelift. She's got Robert the Doll front and center. Talk about your creepy crawlies.

Back on Hauntster, The Ghostsuckers are coming! Led by Dr. Martin Fornicopious, they're coming just as soon as they find their way out of their special Ghostsuckers Bus! Meanwhile, you can check out their cartoon counterparts at Elena Steier's Striporama!

Jemiah Jefferson

WE ARE THE FIEND CLUB!
If stories about hunting humans is your meat, then you might be interested in Jemiah Jefferson's new novel, FIEND.

From the grave, Orfeo recalls his first one hundred forty years in some of the most legendary settings of a rapidly modernizing Europe, exploring every mortal and venal sin along his journey. In this long-awaited companion to her acclaimed novels VOICE OF THE BLOOD and WOUNDS, Jemiah Jefferson brings to life a complex tapestry of bloodlust and continuous enlightenment, from the salons and gutters of bohemian Paris to the glittering angst of Weimar Berlin.

Jemiah's writing is collecting kudos from Poppy Z. Brite, Douglas Clegg, Horror World, and more.

Author Jemiah Jefferson spent her formative years in Denver, Colorado (Host City for the World Horror Convention 2000 and where Feo got stuck at a snowbound airport for 8 freaking hours after the WHC 2005, god dammit!). She began writing at an early age, and continues her work in small-press publications, on the Internet, and reviews for local independent newspapers. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

CARDINALS FAIL - AGAIN - TO ELECT POPE
A second day of black smoke from the Sistine Chapel chiminy, reveals the failure to elect a new Pope. Though trying to build on John Paul II's legacy, as well as heal deep rifts in the Catholic Church, some Cardinals are not taking the conclave as seriously as would be expected. In the two failed votes, for example, Alfred E. Neuman has received 5 ballots.

HORROR TOONS
From time to time, political cartoonists make hay with a Horror theme, and invariably that Horror is an old classic, more based on some old Universal monster than the literary classic. I'd like more creativity, but you can't expect much from a political cartoonist. That said, here is today's Horror Toon from Mike Thompson of Detroit, Michigan and the Detroit Free Press.

DRAGGING JENNY INTO THE OPEN

I am proud to announce the forthcoming publication of a new City Contrast chapbook by my friend Jenny Orosel. NONE OF THIS IS REAL is a haunting, subtle, and creepy view into the mind of a troubled young artist.

Not only was I privileged enough to get an early look at NONE OF THIS IS REAL, I was honored to write a foreword for it!

From Staci Wilson
(FeoNote: All through most of last week and this weekend I was sick and in the hospital or confined to bed at home. So I'm still playing catch-up here. Staci sent me this and I'm sending it to you! Staci sez of the premier party: It was a blast... and kind weird, since I read The Amityville Horror book when I was about 12 - who'da thunk I'd actually be interviewing the man who lived in that haunted house years later?)
RYAN REYNOLDS ROCKS THE (HAUNTED) HOUSE!
While Ryan Reynolds, star of the new The Amityville Horror remake, was for the most part clean-shaven at last night’s big Hollywood premiere, his proud — conspicuously bearded — pop was there to give him props. From John Weagly
RADIOACTIVE MONKEYS HAVE ARRIVED

Where, exactly, does one find a radioactive monkey?

The answer to this age old question is finally here. These creepy creatures can be caught behind the bars of zoos and prisons. These mythological monsters can be met in fleabag motels and on over-crowded street-corners. These voracious villains can be viewed in the hills, in our living rooms and even on popular daytime TV.

Most importantly, Radioactive Monkeys can be found inside the imaginations of the eight talented writers included in the Iguana Publications chapbook REQUIEM FOR THE RADIOACTIVE MONKEYS. Featuring stories and poems by Tina L. Jens, Martin Mundt, Wally Cwik, Paul Dailing, Bruce Arthurs, Barbara Geiger, Wayne Allen Sallee and J. A. Konrath.

This chap is edited by John Weagly (THE UNDERTOW OF SMALL TOWN DREAMS) who is a member in good standing of the Chicago based Horror Writer's group, Twilight Tales. Twilight Tales folk are also known to appear, with some frequency, at the Red Lion Inn for macabre readings and such.

On April 7, Horror Writer, Brett Savory (Chiaroscuro), wrote to tell us that he's about to lose his job (possible foregone conclusion by this time), and that he's looking for work if you can help. Impending doom kept Brett away from the World Horror Convention in New York City. But that's not the big news and doesn't pertain to this site. What IS the big news is that Dave Barnett of Necro Publications, has made Brett an offer on the hardcover and paperback rights to THE DISTANCE TRAVELLED.

Brett is ecstatic in the security that he can pay the rent and buy much needed food. He encourages you to read as he freaks out at LiveJournal.com.

THE DISTANCE TRAVELLED was originally published as a 15,000 word hardcover novellette by Prime Books. Now the book has been fleshed out to 85,000 words, which is probably a good thing, since the original was so fascinating that I was actually angry that I couldn't travel more than 15,000 words into it before the journey was over. GRRR! So on a personal level, I look forward to going the distance with Brett's new book.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
One of the busiest actors in Hollywood is also the least known, by movie goers, for his face. That's because he's always keeping his pretty mug covered in make-up - and shows no sign of changing that anytime soon.
Actor Ron Perlman (THE NAME OF THE ROSE, SLEEPWALKERS, CRONOS, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, THE LAST SUPPER, THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, ALIEN: Resurrection, THE SHAFT, BLADE II, STAR TREK: Nemesis, RATS, HELLBOY) is 55.

From E.C.McMullen Jr.
NYC LOVES LEBBON

British Horror fiction writer, Tim Lebbon, has crossed the pond for years, trying to break into the U.S. market. he works hard at his craft, and has won various awards that attest to his talent as a major Horror fiction writer. No one can deny, having read his work, that Tim is quite the little wordsmith. What's more, he's constantly being mistaken - even by members of his own family - for that devilishly good looking Feo Amante. High praise indeed!

Tracey and Ellie Lebbon in NYC's Times Square
Tim Lebbon
Tim Lebbon

This year, Tim brought his wife and daughter to the World Horror Convention 2005 in New York City. His child, the charmingly precocious Tina, not only won the hearts of the Horror writers in attendance, but, within 24 hours of entering Manhattan, got her photograph on page 4 of the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS!

Young Tina, at the age of 3, is clearly going places and a talent to be reckoned with. It is said that her father, Tim, hopes to ride her coat tales to some measure of fame for himself. It is said that he is a writer of some note, which isn't bad for a man his age.

Elsewhere at the New York convention, the elevators were running day and night without rest at the Park Central hotel where the conference took place. It was inevitable that an elevator would get stuck. Word was indeed passed to convention organizer, Monica O'Rourke, that,

Feo: "Monica, one of the elevators got stuck between floors."
Monica: "Oh great!"
Feo: "And Harlan is on it."
Monica: "Oh CRAP!"

Tracey Lebbon with Daughter Ellie

Yes, Guest of Honor, Harlan Ellison, spent a quiet 30 minutes aboard one of Park Central hotel's fabulous antique elevators. It is said that the heat generated from the elevator car over the course of a half hour, made the metal in the shaft expand, allowing the car to continue unabated to its destination. New York City is perfect in the Spring. Cullen Bunn won the annual Gross-Out contest again and Robert S. Rhine, though he wasn't present, won the Dark Fiction contest.

MOONBATS AND DINGBATS
Having a loved one Starved to Death by government enforcement is a Horror, but that won't stop some supposedly moral people from standing upon the warm bodies of folks like Terri Schiavo to "embiggen" themselves. Take the latest case of Republican in Hiding, Senator Mel Martinez. Score this one for the Moonbats.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
Her Full House days long past, today's birthday girl has since filled her career with television thrillers which, to be honest, really ain't too bad! Happy Birthday to -
Actor Candace Cameron Bure (I SAW WHAT YOU DID, MONSTER MASH: THE MOVIE, SHARON'S SECRET, VISITORS OF THE NIGHT, NO ONE WOULD TELL, NIGHT SCREAM) is 29.
You probably don't know this about today's birthday boy, but in addition to his long time role in the TV hit, Cheers (Hey Cliffy!), he . . . Well, yes, he was in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. But he was . . . Yes, he did have a recurring role in the first two Superman movies. But the thing is . . . yes, he is a successful voice-over actor these days: having done all six of the Pixar movies. But when he's being an actor in regular movies, he has done an awful lot of Horror/Thriller in his career! So Happy Birthday to
Actor John Ratzenberger (TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING, WARLORD'S OF ATLANTIS, MOTEL HELL, OUTLAND, GOLIATH AWAITS, FIREFOX, WARLORDS OF THE 21ST CENTURY, HOUSE II, TICK TOCK, SPIRITED AWAY, MONSTERS, INC., THE INCREDIBLES) who is 58.

From Bill Gagliani
GAG ME WITH A WOLF

William D. Gagliani (WOLF'S TRAP, numerous short stories), will be attending the World Horror Convention in New York City this week. Here is his anticipated agenda, there may be more.

Thursday, 3:00-4:00 -- "Juggling Writing with a Full-Time Job" (Panel with Gene O'Neill, Gerard Houarner, Linda Addison, P.D. Cacek, Brian Knight, and Rita Oakes)

Thursday, 5:00-5:30 - Reading (Bill will read a selection from his novel, WOLF'S TRAP, or a short story... he can't decide yet!)

Friday, 8:00-10:00 - Mass Autograph Signing (he'll have some copies of WOLF'S TRAP and selected anthologies on hand).

Saturday, 12:00am - tba - Bill and Feo will get rip roaring drunk and throw white rum filled balloons out of the top floor of the hotel. This is a "By Invitation Only" event and, as all events thrown by drunks, may not occur at all. But if it does happen, we hope to raise an awareness that begs the question: "Why the rum?"

Bill is looking forward to meeting old friends and new fans, but if you see him, please introduce yourself first, as Bill is notoriously shy.

Tom Piccirilli

From Tom Piccirilli
PICKIN' AT THE STOKERS

From Tom Piccirilli's latest newsletter comes word that La Factoria Des Ideas has just acquired the Spanish language rights to A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN. Should be out in the next year or so. These folks also did a Spanish edition (now in its second printing) of THE NIGHT CLASS.

As Judi Rohrig of Hellnotes reported to us last week, two of Tom's books have made the final ballot for the Bram Stoker Award: The poetry anthology he edited THE DEVIL'S WINE and his poetry collection WAITING MY TURN TO GO UNDER THE KNIFE. He's especially happy that they're both poetry and that, although there was recently a vote to keep/ abolish a few categories from the ballot, there was enough interest shown in poetry to keep it around. Tom is a 3 time Bram Stoker winner for A STUDENT OF HELL, THE NIGHT CLASS, and THE MISFIT CHILD GROWS FAT ON DESPAIR.

When notified about his recent nominations, Tom said,
"Again with the f*cking Stokers!"

(KIDDING! I KID! - Feo)

And finally, word is from Larry Roberts of Bloodletting Press that Tom's 40k word novella THRUST shipped from the printers a couple days ago. Copies will be in Larry's hands within the week or so and he'll be shipping out shortly thereafter.

HAPPY HORROR / THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO:
And on Sunday -
Writer/Director/Producer/Actor Lamberto Bava (TERRORE NELLO SPAZIO, KILL BABY...KILL!, HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON, BAY OF BLOOD, BARON BLOOD, THE HOUSE OF EXORCISM, THE LAST SURVIVOR, TENEBRE, DEMONI, THE MIDNIGHT KILLER, DEMONI 2, SHOCK, MACABRO, A BLADE IN THE DARK, LA CHIESA, BODY PUZZLE, THE TORTURER) is 61.
And on Saturday -
In both TV and movies, today's birthday girl has largely directed her career toward work in the Horror / Thriller / Mystery / Suspense genres
Actor Lindy Booth (EERIE INDIANA [TV], TEENAGE SPACE VAMPIRES, THE SKULLS II, AMERICAN PSYCHO 2, ODYSSEY 5, WRONG TURN, DAWN OF THE DEAD [2004], CRY WOLF) and is 26 today.
This birthday boy hasn't turned his sights on our favorite genres in any specific way, yet he has been in some Horror classics - both good and cheesy - that are hard to ignore!
Actor Dabbs Greer (HOUSE OF WAX [1953], INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS [1956], THE VAMPIRE [1957], IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE, EVIL TOWN, PACIFIC HEIGHTS, SUNDOWN: THE VAMPIRE IN RETREAT, HOUSE IV, THE GREEN MILE) is 88.

It's that time of year again when your vote counts! Assuming that you are a member of the Horror Writers Association. Otherwise, your vote ain't squat!
