Pick Me Up
PICK ME UP - 2006
IDT Entertainment / Nice Guy Productions
Screenplay: David J. Schow
Director: Larry Cohen
Producer: Mick Garris

Larry Cohen made his mark in movies featuring strong minority leads, and yet this is the only movie I've ever seen him make with a single minority actor whose character gets killed. If Masters of Horror can be considered a microcosm of Hollywood Horror film making, then it is not only following the URCA, but is beating it into the ground.

This seems to be a first for Larry, but since directors aren't the only ones involved in making a movie, I don't count this against him. Still, with such a large cast and so many survivors at the end (
6), its kind of amazing that the one and only minority, the bus driver (Tom Pickett: BORDELLO OF BLOOD) gets killed.

PICK ME UP ends with many white survivors and only white survivors.

SLITHER - 2006
Dimension Films
Screenplay: James Gunn
Director: James Gunn
Producer(s): Paul Brooks, Eric Newman

Many people die in this movie, many live, but only white people survive the odds. SLITHER, like the majority of movies made in Hollywood, cast several actors in body count roles. If you aren't white, you're among the dead. It's as simple as that.

FEAST - 2006
Dimension Films
Screenplay: Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton
Director: John Gulager,
Producer(s): Michael Leahy, Joel Soisson

Like the majority of Horror Thriller movies made in Hollywood, if the film features a non-white at all, that person is dead meat. Unfortunately, FEAST doesn't stray from this. White people may die, but by god ONLY White people shall LIVE! Actor Anthony "Treach" Chriss (EL CHUPACABRA) was cast to play the only minority - who doesn't survive.

PULSE - 2006
Dimension Films
Screenplay: Wes Craven, Ray Wright, Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Director: Jim Sonzero
Producer(s): Michael Leahy, Joel Soisson

There are three minority actors in this movie, but only two of them had any appreciable screen time, Stone (Rick Gonzalez) and Isabel (Christie Milian). Now, out of all of the main characters both white and minority, guess who survives to tell the tale? What's weird about their deaths is, the two white folks who survive the "Pulse" went through everything that Stone and Isabel did, only the white folks went through it first! The Ghosts actually skip the white folks and go after the minorities.

Some readers say that, on the DVD extras, the black landlady had a bigger role, but her scenes were cut out, so she doesn't belong in the URCA.

That's true. The black landlady did have a larger role, that of being a thief who steals from her dead tenants and sells their property. The white guy who realizes this, buys the stolen stuff anyway, but the movie paints him as a good guy because he bounced a check to the landlady. So if the scene had not been cut, this movie would not have got the URCA, because it would have then showed minorities as either folks who cannot survive or thieves.

But what matters is not what is cut, but what is in the movie, and as such, PULSE stands as still another example of the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÉ ALERT.

Shadow PuppetsSHADOW PUPPETS - 2007
Angel Entertainment Corporation / RMR Productions LLC / Anchor Bay Entertainment
Screenplay: Michael Winnick
Director: Michael Winnick
Producer: Bob Crowe

Of the various people in this movie, all were revealed to be white-collar professionals except for the two black men. The two men are a Security guard (Richard Whiten: THE ISLAND) and a convicted felon (Tony Todd: CANDYMAN). The single black woman is a lawyer: a perpetually frightened, feckless coward who has to be constantly dragged to safety by the brave white people until she finally gets her deadly comeuppance.

All three black people die.

Only white survivors.

Night Junkies
Night Junkies / Scanner-Rhodes Productions / Allumination
Screenplay: Lawrence Pearce
Director: Lawrence Pearce
Producer: Dean Fisher

Max's hired hand is a body guard. He doesn't say anything. Not much. Chuckles a few times. Laughs a few times. He's mainly there as Max's hired muscle. He is also the only minority in the whole cast. But he's more than just an extra, he appears predominently in most of the scenes with Max. So you just get the feeling, THE FEELING, that he's supposed to be there as a corpse.

Well whattya know? I was right! NIGHT JUNKIES has a lot of white survivors, but only white survivors.

Trancas International Films / Spectacle Entertainment Group / Nightfall Productions / Dimension Films
Screenplay: Rob Zombie
Director: Rob Zombie
Producers: Rob Zombie, Malek Akkad, Andy Gould

And boy, was Ken Foree's role of truck driver Big Joe Grizzly, sportin' a 1970's style jeri curl, a racial cliché! Big Joe comes onto the scene bee-boppin', shuckin' & jivin' with his groovy Huggy Bear street lingo all the way to the rest room and even while he's taking a crap!

Big Joe is not the only minority in the movie who has any appreciable screen time. Danny Trejo as Ismael is also there. There are a lot of white folks who die in this flick, and a lot of white folks who survive in this flick. But as usual, what happens in most Hollywood made Horror Thriller movies where a minority has some screen time and isn't a mere extra? Yep, Ismael is drowned and Big Joe dies big time. Then Michael goes and drives away in Big Joe's big 18 wheeler. Because Michael, who has been in isolation for the last 15 years, inexplicably learned how to drive a twelve shift semi-truck!

AResident Evil: ExtinctionRESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION - 2007
Resident Evil Productions, Constantin Film Produktion, Davis-Films, Impact Pictures
Screenplay: Paul W. S. Anderson
Director: Russell Mulcahy
Producers: Paul W. S. Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Robert Kulzer

A friend asked me if I'd seen this movie and I told him a bit about it, mentioning the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÉ. My friend has never been happy with the URCA as he holds to the belief that characters who die in movies, just happen to die! It has nothing to do with their skin color - its just chance!

There are lots of white survivors in RE3. There are a lot of non-whites in this movie too. But the character who has a Latino sounding name? He dies.

The three black people: L.J. (Mike Epps), Betty (Ashanti), and an Umbrella Tech (John Eric Bentley) die. Runty (Ramon Franco) also dies. In short, if your skin is not white you WILL die.

Another odd thing. Remember the little white girl, The Red Queen, in the first RESIDENT EVIL? The Red Queen was a bad software avatar and Alice killed her. In RE3, another little software avatar white girl, named The White Queen, is good and gets to live.

So even though everyone who wasn't white died, and only white people lived (including the white software hologram girl named White Queen!), my friend still asserts that it means nothing.

His logic is: Since I am not psychic I can't possibly get into the heads of the folks who made this movie and learn what they really thought. I cannot possibly judge their observable actions because I can't read their minds. If I can't read their minds then what I've seen them do is immaterial. Because if they don't come out and actually admit that they intentionally made this movie to purposefully kill off all of the minority characters, then they didn't!

So let's say that this movie was real life, and in real life everyone who was not white was slaughtered and only the white people were allowed to live. The non-whites who were all slaughtered were done in by a bunch of other white people (the creators of this film). They did it without giving a reason why. Well then, who am I to judge them? I have no idea what they were thinking!

So what am I saying? That the creators of this film are racist or bigoted?

Am I saying that they made a film that uses the standard Racial Cliché of killing off everyone who isn't white and leaving only white survivors?

30 Days of Night
30 DAYS OF NIGHT - 2007
30 Days of Night, Dark Horse Entertainment, Ghost House Pictures, Columbia Pictures
Screenplay: Steve Niles, Stuart Beattie, Brian Nelson
Director: David Slade
Producers: Sam Raimi, Robert G. Tapert

As much as I like this movie, it still gets the URCA. At the start of this film, we see all manner of folks from various races - mainly Eskimo. But there are only a handful of people who actually have talking parts - more than just background extra work. And all of them die.

Make no mistake, they die heroically! They die saving the white folks! They are a credit to their race! But they still die. In one scene, Carter Davies (Samoan actor Nathanial Lees: THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS, THE MATRIX: RELOADED, THE MATRIX: REVOLUTIONS), finds himself turning into a vampire, and asks a white guy to please kill him. Which the white guy does, by chopping off his head. Later in the movie, Billy Kitka (Maori/Arawa actor Manu Bennet), also starts turning and the same white guy chops his head off too!

In this movie, if you're a non-white you don't get killed off by the vampires, you get your head chopped off by a white friend trying to do you a favor! Yow! I mean, I loved this movie, but ... wow!

Sin City

POP Films, Shoreline Entertainment, Magnolia Pictures
Screenplay: David Bruckner, Dan Bush, and Jacob Gentry
Director(s): David Bruckner, Dan Bush, and Jacob Gentry
Producers: Jacob Gentry, Alexander Motlagh

Yeah, I gave it 5 Shriek Girls, but it still gets an URCA, which just goes to show that I don't use the URCA against the overall grade of a film.

That said, there are only three speaking roles for non-whites in this movie. Janice (Suehyla El-Attar) is stabbed to death, Rod (Michael Sahr Ngaujah) is shot by the only other non-white person with a speaking role in this movie, the Police Woman (Pat Yeary), who he kills. Rod is eventually beheaded and his head is used for a comic relief. Three survivors in this movie and all of them are white.

The Mist
THE MIST - 2007
Darkwoods Procutions / Dimension Films

Screenplay: Frank Darabont
Director: Frank Darabont
Producer (s): Frank Darabont, Liz Glotzer

Brent Norton (Andre Braugher) leads a group of men out into the mist to their vehicles or otherwise get help. THE MIST clearly establishes that if you don't come back, it's because you died, as evidenced by the one man in the group who returns... from the waist down.

The only other three minority actors in the movie with any screen time are three soldiers (extras never count, and for good reason. On movie sets they are addressed as "Background", as in "Background, if any of you look directly at our lead actor again I'll going to pick you out of the group and send you home. Avert your gaze, now!"). Two of them kill themselves and a third one goes "ALIEN", apologizing for bringing destruction upon the remaining white folks - right before the varmints burst out of him. Only white survivors. Lots of white survivors.

HackHACK! - 2007
Smithfield Street Productions / Autumn Entertainment
Screenplay: Matt Flynn
Director: Matt Flynn
Producer (s): Brian Hartman, Sean Kanan, Mike Wittlin
The UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÉ ALERT has become so standard in presumably progressive Hollywood that sometimes film makers make fun of it.

Writer Director Matt Flynn had his actor, Wondgy Brunt, as the character "Q", broach the subject in conversation, and then Flynn committed the URCA to film anyway. Sometimes you feel as if someone in the Hollywood film industry might actually get into trouble if they don't adhere to the URCA. But admitting to the URCA and then doing it anyway doesn't let you off the hook.

It means you know you are doing something racist and don't care. Leaving three white people surviving at the end, Flynn made sure that Ricky (Justin Chon), Q (Wondgy Brunt), and Sheriff Stoker (Tony Burton) were all slaughtered.

Understand that there are still people who argue with me over this. So let me clarify a few things.

Does the URCA mean that anyone who kills off all of the minorities in their movie is racist? Absolutely not. Does that mean they are following a thoughtless, no-talent, hack, worn-out, clichéd racial stereotype trope? Yes! That is exactly what it means.

So does THAT mean that anyone who EVER does this in their movie is a racist or an untalented hack? Nope. But consider: Suppose there was a new cliché! And that new Hollywood trope meant that every woman who appears in the Horror Thriller movie is violently raped (that's what rape is, you know. There is no such thing as a passive rapist). Nearly every time a Hollywood Horror Thriller movie came out, every woman in the picture got raped on camera. What would that mean? If you are a woman reading this, how would that make you feel? How would you feel to know that every movie theater had at least one movie playing where every woman in the film gets raped. And those movies play 365 days a year.

How about if nearly every Horror Thriller movie that came out of Hollywood had an obligatory male homosexual rape scene of every male in the picture? Imagine that: Nearly every Hollywood Horror Thriller movie from this moment on will have an obligatory male homosexual rape scene. By the end of the movie, every man in the picture has been forcefully sodomized against his will at least once by another man. If you are a man reading this, how would it make you feel to know that there was an entire section in your local video rental store that had every male actor in the movie violently raped? What would that mean? Would it mean anything?

How do you feel even reading this? Of course, if you are a minority woman or man in the U.S., you already know how it feels to walk into your local video rental store and know that nearly every Hollywood Horror Thriller movie, in its own section, kills off every last person who has your skin color. Nearly every one. Hell, they practically have the entire section dedicated to it!

Maybe it would be, like some people say of the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÉ ALERT, all just coincidence. That however many men got raped in the movie just happened to be the ones who get raped in the movie. Like the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÉ ALERT is all just a long string of coincidences. By the way, HACK! makes the 75th coincidence. Over 30 since the year 2000 alone.

...and counting.

Sands of Oblivion
Starz Entertainment
Screenplay: Kevin VanHook, Jeff Coatney
Director (s): David Flores, Kevin VanHook
Producer (s): Kevin VanHook, Karen Bailey

Hey, big cast! Lots of people! How many do you think were minorities?

Only one token in a starring role. Azie Tesfai, as Jamie, gets killed off right quick.

Lots of people die, lots of people live, but in the huge cast of people who survive and have speaking parts, guess how many are white? All of them. Only white survivors.

Not that this "Kill all of the minorities in a Hollywood Horror Thriller movie" actually exists, mind you. This is merely coincidence #76 in the "Nobody cares if I kill off every single person of your race in my movie" URCA.

The TripperTHE TRIPPER - 2006 (wide release in 2008)
Coquette Productions / NaVinci Films / Raw Entertainment
Screenplay: David Arquette, Joe Harris
Director: David Arquette
Producer (s): David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Evan Astrowsky, Neil A. Machlis, Navin Narang

"I went to see Logan's Run, right? They had a movie of the future called Logan's Run. Ain't no n*ggers in it. I said, well, white folks ain't planning for us to be here.
That's why we gotta make movies, and we be in the future. But we gotta make some really hip movies. We done made enough movies about pimps, because white folks already know about pimpin’. We the biggest hoe's they got!"
-Richard Pryor

Pryor said that back in the 1970s and in various newspapers and magazines, writers tried to set Richard's mind at ease.

No, no, no, there were some black people in Logan's Run! Honest! Well, one anyway. Why, if Richard had only paid attention to the last five minutes of the movie, before the credits, for about one second, he would have seen a black woman (or maybe a man, it was very fast), in the crowd scene as everyone leaves the city.

On-set extras and musicians (in case of a stage show) are known as "the background". What is "the background"? On movie sets, in crowd scenes, sometimes living flesh and blood extras sit next to lifeless plastic dummies. That's what an extra is, that's what "the background" is. So when someone sends me an email and says,
"I saw ("X") movie and it doesn't deserve an UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHE ALERT! I saw a black guy or woman, I couldn't be sure but they were definitely black - or maybe hispanic at least - and they were in the crowd scene! And they didn't show them dying!"
"There was a Mexican in the band!" (how in the hell could they know that person came from Mexico and not Nicaragua or Panama?)
"At 0118 on my DVD player, the main characters walk past a homeless black guy sleeping on the sidewalk! So the movie shouldn't get an URCA 'cause we didn't see him die!"

To all of that I say, "Seriously?"

In THE TRIPPER, the main token black character of drug addled Linda (Actor Marsha Thomason) gets butchered. Lots of white survivors at the end who were Actual Characters in the movie. Just no black ones. No minority survivors at all.

So I draw this line (not for the first time) because the band Fishbone is in the movie. Fishbone aka Norwood Fisher, says one line (besides his song). "The show's over." That's not a starring role. That's an extra with one line. Any black people who are actual characters in the movie die. There is one other extra, apparently not part of the band, who plays a drum during the dance scene where the extras are acting all drugged up. As the only noticable black man in a sea of white folk, and because he's slapping a congo drum, he stands out for the (perhaps) 1.5 seconds he has onscreen. That's it! And in the DVD commentary, while we are watching all of these white people extras dancing and acting wired, one of the commenters (I think it was Richmond Arquette - whose character of Deputy Cooper also survives) makes a point of saying that he thought the "Drummer really was on drugs."

Now of course, Richmond was actually in the movie so he would know better than me. But it was still odd how he singled out the only black guy in an entire crowd scene for being the only one really on drugs. To be fair, since David Arquette, Jason Mewes, and Jaime King were all recovering from heroin addiction at the time they made this flick, perhaps it was a compliment?

Alien ApocalypseALIEN APOCALYPSE - 2008
ApolloProScreen / Anchor Bay entertainment / Starz
Screenplay: Josh Becker
Director: Josh Becker
Producer: Bob Perkis, Cindy Carroll

Apparently, the only people who were able to survive the alien invasion on earth were white people. When the one minority returns from a space probe mission, he gets his head chewed off by the aliens. From then on, while Dr. Hood discovers and rounds up an army of various tribal survivors, they are all white tribal survivors. Holy crap! Not even indigenous American tribes survived the alien onslaught. On the other hand, this movie was shot near Sofia, Bulgaria for cheapnis so there probably aren't too many dark complexions over there.

According to Writer/Director Josh Becker, actor Michael Cory Davis said, "Of course the only black character gets killed."
to which Becker replied,
"Yeah, but this role wasn't written for a black actor." Yeah! So in your face, chocolate man!

Becker actually thinks that's a trump in his favor.

To which I reply,
"Yeah, but out of all of the major speaking roles in this movie, and there are plenty, you made sure to cast only one minority, and then have him in the role of the dead guy. And I'll bet the script never called for that either!"

What else did Josh say? "No, don't take that attitude! This isn't racist! This role wasn't written for a black actor. But since he dies in the movie, and since you have dark skin, we'll cast you in the role!" ? I've no idea.

This is the whole, narrow, specific, point of the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHE ALERT and I'm still amazed how some people claim that they just don't GET it. EVEN when the actor stands right there and openly points it out to them. Freakin' DU-UH???

DoomsdayDOOMSDAY - 2008
Crystal Sky Pictures / Intrepid Pictures / Moonlighting Films / Rogue Pictures
Screenplay: Neill Marshall
Director: Neill Marshall
Producer (s): Benedict Carver, Steven Paul

Shot in England, Scotland, and South Africa, three of this movie's four production companies are based in Hollywood. What does that mean? Only that DOOMSDAY continues the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÉ ALERT theory. There can be any number of reasons, or excuses, as to why it was used here. But that said, it was still used.

Eden Sinclair's second-in-command Norton (Adrian Lester: THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW), and Prime Minister Hatcher (Alexander Siddig), don't survive to the credits. Only three Scots make it, and you don't get much whiter than the Scottish.

Trailer Park of Terror
Trailer Park Partners / Bogner / Drac Studios / Summit Entertainment
Screenplay: Timothy Dolan
Director: Steven Goldman
Producer (s): Todd Tucker, Harvey Lowry, Andrew Cohen, James Dracoules (co-creator of the comic), Majeed Nami, and 17 more if you can believe it.

Only two minorities in this movie and they both get killed. Michelle Lee plays Miss China, the hooker. She's toast.

Then Haley Marie Norman plays Amber, the juvenile delinquent slut, and she bites it. At least three white folk survive, four if you count the stranger. But take note: ONLY white folk survive. Non-whites just don't have it in them to beat the odds in a Hollywood Horror Thriller movie.

The Spirit
Lionsgate / Odd Lot Entertainment / Continental Entertainment Group / Media Magik Entertainment
Screenplay: Frank Miller
Director: Frank Miller
Producer (s): Deborah Del Prete, Gigi Pritzker, Michael E. Uslan

Samuel L. Jackson was the only non-white in the movie who was actually playing a minority in the movie. Eva Mendes played Sand Seref and even her origins as a child didn't label her as a non-white. So with Samuel L. Jackson as the only black guy in the whole movie, guess who dies? There could have been other non-whites. But no, Jackson stands alone and gets blown to bits. And having minorities playing white people doesn't count.

Many white survivors at the end, including the evil / bad guy/gal white folks.

UnbornUNBORN - 2009
Rogue Pictures
Writer: David S. Goyer
Director: David S. Goyer
Producer (s): Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Bradley Fuller

White people all over the place, one minority - Casey's black friend, Romy (Megan Goode) gets killed by a white kid who is really innocent! It's that damn spirit's fault! Naturally I'm thinking, "It's 2009 and we still have these damn RACIAL CLICHES."

But hark! Two more black actors with speaking parts come into the story the minute the single black actor dies. Now I'm thinking, "That's kind of odd to introduce these two guys like they are going to be major players in the movie when there can't be more than 30 minutes left!"

Nope, actors Idris Elba (THE REAPING - character dies in that one too) and Craig J. Harris get their characters killed off too - mighty damn quick. Only white survivors, and there were plenty of white survivors. Korean actor, C.S. Lee had a walk-on role, for all of the thirty seconds he had on screen. Was he there to make a loop-hole?

I gotta say it: "Hey Hollywood! It's 2009 already! When are you going to be done with this shit?"

Rogue Pictures
Writer: David Benioff, Skip Woods
Director: Gavin Hood
Producer (s): Hugh Jackman, John Palermo, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Ralph Winter

There are only two racial "minority" characters in this movie, John Wraith (
Will i am) and Agent Zero (Daniel Henney) that actually have a part in this movie. The rest are extras or background characters who are quickly killed off without so much as a single line. Of those, only a few have any seconds onscreen and have such wonderful character names as "Nervous African Woman". In regards to the URCA, a number of people are writing me emails and actually sending me the timecode on their DVD player so I'll know the precise second that the camera wizzed by someone who is not white and wasn't killed in a particular movie. Holy crap!

Go back, read the whole point of the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHE ALERT. Okay? Good. XMEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE gets it for having many main characters survive to the end - Except they're all white. The only main characters who were not white get killed. Every non-white dies. That's what the racial cliche alert is, that's how it works, and in the year 2009, it is still going strong and shows no sign of letting up.

I know, I know, it's all just coincidence, but this is coincidence #83. 16 "coincidences" just since 2006!

Trancas International Films / Spectacle Entertainment Group / Dimension Films
Screenplay: Rob Zombie
Director: Rob Zombie
Producers: Rob Zombie, Malek Akkad, Andy Gould

Octavia Spencer (SPIDER-MAN, PULSE, THE NINES, DRAG ME TO HELL) as Nurse Danielles, is given just enough screen time to be an actual character and not just a walk-on extra. Naturally a lot of white people die in this movie, but Nurse Danielles is the only minority in HALLOWEEN II, and while there are lots of white survivors at the end, like all Rob Zombie movies, there sure as hell aren't any non-whites surviving at the end!

SurrogatesSURROGATES - 2009
Mandeville Films, Top Shelf Productions, Wintergreen Productions, Touchstone Pictures

Screenplay: Michael Ferris, John D. Broncato
Director: Jonathon Mostow
Producers: Max Handleman, David Hoberman, Todd Leiberman
This is one of those oddball URCAs. In the beginning of SURROGATES, they make it clear that the human users of the Surrogates, may look nothing like the robots. A sexy woman could actually be a fat bald man. A towering tall young black man may really be a small old white man.

At one point in the movie a beautiful black surrogate tells agent Greer, "I'm not a doctor." To which Greer snarkily replies, "I don't know what you are honey. For all I know you could be some fat guy with his dick hanging out."

Even the inventor of the surrogates, Lionel Canter, uses different surrogates of different races and ages as pleases him.

So it's clear that surrogates don't necessarily represent their users. And its clear that the shut down or destruction of a minority surrogate doesn't mean the death of a human character who operates as its user, right?

And yet, there is only one actual minority human user in the whole movie. So guess what? Stone (
Boris Kodjoe), dies! Anybody else could have been a minority, but nobody else was.

PandorumPANDORUM - 2009
Constantin Film Produktion, Impact Pictures
Screenplay: Travis Milloy, Christian Alvart
Director: Christian Alvart
Producers: Paul W. S. Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Robert Kulzer, Martin Moszkowicz

Like nearly all of Producers Paul W. S. Anderson & Jeremy Bolt's Horror Thriller movies (with the exception of Bolt & Anderson's EVENT HORIZON), all of the minorities are killed off.
Anderson & Bolt's movies follow the template of heroic yet flawed minority who finds it within themselves to make sure the caucasian people survive.

Meanwhile, the caucasian people, who live to the end, have made sure that they and other caucasian people survive. The flawed-because-he-can't-speak-English, Manh (actor Cung Le), and the flawed-because-he-has-done-terrible-things-to survive on the horrifying ship, Leland (Eddie Rouse), both die trying to save the spaceship and the white couple, who live to tell the tale. Only white survivors as far as the eye can see.

AvatarAVATAR - 2009
Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, Dune Entertainment, Giant Studios, Ingenious Film Partners, Lightstorm Entertainment
Screenplay: James Cameron
Director: James Cameron
Producer (s): James Cameron, Jon Landau

Whether we are talking TERMINATOR, ALIENS, TERMINATOR 2, THE ABYSS or TRUE LIES, Cameron is a man seemingly uncomfortable with non-white people.

I personally don't know the man, never even talked to him. All I have to go on is his work.

For example, how does Neytiri know that Jake is fake? It seems that, in the future, nearly every human is white, save for a very few background extras, one soldier, Private Fike (Sean Anthony Moran, blink and you'll miss him), one scientist, Dr. Max Patel (Dileep Rao: DRAG ME TO HELL), who has about four lines and 30 seconds out of a 2 hour and 40 minute movie. So all of the hybrid-Na'vi like Jake, Grace, and Norm are thin lipped Na'vi hybrids. Cameron cast all of the lead Na'vi primitives using minority actors. Why would James cast only minority actors as all of the major alien characters in his movie HE wrote, Directed, produced, edited, and had full control over, unless he felt that minorities do a great job of physically appearing like primitive tree dwellers?

You think I'm kidding?

The Book of EliTHE BOOK OF ELI - 2010
Alcon Entertainment, Silver Pictures, Warner Bros.Partners, Lightstorm Entertainment
Screenplay: Gary Whitta
Director (s): Albert Hughes, Allen Hughes
Producer (s): Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Joel Silver, David Valdes, Denzel Washington
Except for Denzel Washington, there are no other minority actors with any leading or even character roles. There are a few minority actors in silent extra and walk-on roles, playing no race in particular
* and Denzel's character of Eli makes short work of them. As the star and producer of this movie, there can be but one black man in the future and he is it.

Also, only white people, good or bad, are portrayed as leaders of any group.

Then Denzel's character dies, having nobly sacrificed himself so that the remaining white people - one hell of a lot of white people - can have an apparently better, minority free future.

Um... okay then.

*with their faces so covered up by clothing, and the choice of lighting in this movie, it's impossible to tell much about them at all.

Universal Pictures, Relativity Media, Stuber Productions
Screenplay: Kevin Andrew Walker, David Self
Director (s): Mark Romanek, Joe Johnston
Producer (s): Sean Daniel, Benicio Del Toro, Scott Stuber, Rick Yorn
Despite any love you may have for the work of Rudyard Kipling, there's really no need to have an East Indian manservant living in 19th Century England, but if that's what you want, Okay.

There's also no reason why there can't be minorities among your Gypsies. Especially since their "mixed blood", "mongrel" aspects are one of those things that white supremacists of that era railed against concerning their many issues with Gypsies. But hey, an all white band of Gypsies makes perfect sense too.

What doesn't make sense is why you would insist on only a single minority in your movie, and then INSIST that the minority dies while a bunch of white characters survive to the end. This is what the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÉ ALERT is all about. Whether you have one or many minority characters in your movie, you kill them all leaving only white survivors. And since 2000, the number of Horror Thriller movies like this coming out of Hollywood has only increased.

Piranha 3DPIRANHA 3D - 2010
Atmosphere Entertainment MM, Chako Film Company, Dimension Films, Intellectual Properties Worldwide, The Weinstein Company
Screenplay: Pete Goldfinger, Josh Stohlberg
Director: Alexander Aja
Producer (s): Alexandre Aja, Mark Canton, Marc Toberoff
You know the body count by now. And speaking of body count, the only minority in the whole movie, Deputy Fallon (
Ving Rhames) gets chewed up by Piranhas. Now does this happen by freak accident?

Deputy Fallon knowingly gets right into the water with the hungry piranhas, grabs an outboard motor, and props all of the piranhas in front of him. NOT behind him, where they are busily EATING him. No, just in front of him. He's not saving anyone, least of all himself. But they had to do SOMETHING to keep the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHE ALERT thriving!

CenturionCENTURION - 2010
Celador Films
Screenplay: Neil Marshall
Director: Neil Marshall
Producer (s): Christian Colson, Robert Jones
There are only two non-whites in this movie. Despite the many speaking characters in CENTURION, white people and only white people are capable of beating the odds to survive through to the end.

The African character of Macros (
Noel Clarke) and the Middle East character of Tarak (Riz Ahmed), were out of place amidst all of the caucasians. They racially served no purpose within the setting, and from the start their sparsely drawn characters seem there only for purposes of body count.

The Rig
THE RIG - 2010
Offspring Productions, Workshop Films 2, Strategic Film Partners, Anchor Bay Entertainment
Screenplay: Scott Martin, Marilee A. Benson, Lori Chavez, C.W. Fallin
Director: Peter Atencio
Producer (s): James D. Benson, Lori Chavez
Of the cast of THE RIG, some folks were cast as those whose characters would die, while others were cast as those whose characters would live. Some characters got to die in acts of heroism. Some characters got to be the heroes who lived!

"That's for my brother you son of a bitch!"

Non-white actors Carmen Perez, Marcus T. Paulk, and Eric Bivens-Bush were not cast as the characters of heroes or survivors.

Super8SUPER 8 - 2011
Paramount Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, Bad Robot
Screenplay: J.J. Abrams
Director: J.J. Abrams
Producer (s): J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Steven Spielberg
It's a fair sized town, and it's a fair-sized group of friends. There are only two minorities in this whole picture who have any screen time. So guess what happens to them? They die. And they die in two ways which are both part of the racist lore that the Unfair Racial Cliche Alert encompasses

High School Science Teacher, Dr. Woodward (
Glynn Turman, also played the high school science teacher who gets killed in GREMLINS), nobly dies while trying to save the (apparently all-white) town as well as the monstrous alien - who is really a good alien if only the evil General Nelec would stop torturing him for a minute!

Nelec's obedient, towering and silent evil henchman, Overmyer (
Richard T. Jones: EVENT HORIZON, PHONE BOOTH, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES [TV]), dies while in the act of being evil.

Unlike earlier Spielberg productions, the kids in this group of friends are all white. I guess a Goonies racial mix wasn't good enough in 2011.

Here we are, into the second decade of the 21st Century, and among the top A-list people in Hollywood, the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHE ALERT rolls on.

Rise of the Planet of the ApesRISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - 2011
20th Century Fox
Screenplay: Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
Director: Rupert Wyatt
Producer (s): Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
You know, there are an awful lot of characters in this film and many among them could have been pretty much any race but white. But in the true mode of the Hollywood RACIAL CLICHE, unless the minority is a woman who is romantically involved with the lead white actor (THE OMEGA MAN, TOTAL RECALL, THE RUNNING MAN, ERASER - Arnold Schwarzenegger did a lot of these), she is going to die.

In this case, there is only a single minority woman Caroline Aranha (Frieda Pinto), who is merely a romantic cypher, doing nothing for the plot, the story, the anything except stand there and be Exposition Gal ("Why did you make the ape so smart?") or Reproachful Gal ("You shouldn't have made the ape so smart.")

Otherwise, who is she (
a zooworker)? What does she do (works in a zoo)? What does her part have to do with the story or anything in this movie at all?

Well actually without her, the entire movie is one big sausage party.

Will's boss, Steve Jacobs (David Oyelowo) is the only other minority in the movie with any screen time (there are a few scenes of minorities looking terrified but that's it). Steve isn't romantically involved with Will and as it turns out, he's evil to boot. So because he is evil (and black?), he is the only human that the apes kill with full intent.

John dies At the EndJOHN DIES AT THE END - 2012
Horror Thriller
Screenplay: Don Coscarelli
Director: Don Coscarelli
Producer(s): Don Coscarelli, Andy Meyers, Brad Baruh, Roman Perez

In fact, this is the most draconian RACIAL CLICHE ALERT I've ever seen in a film since Dean Koontz: PHANTOMS. No URCA has ever left me rating a movie less, but I'd sure enjoy them more if they didn't have these things. The URCA for JOHN DIES AT THE END is virtually completist, which makes it even weirder since that has never been Don's Method of Operation as a filmmaker.

Don Coscarelli never earned the URCA before, and as an indie filmmaker who has had few cinematic brushes with studios, he remains an indie filmmaker.

Is Hollywood finally having an effect on him? Because every non-white in this movie with a speaking part dies. There are plenty of white people who live, but all of the non-whites die. The minority actors were all cast as "You're going to be one of the characters who dies."

I wonder if a casting director for a Horror Thriller ever gathers together all the actors in and says, "Okay, all of the survivors over here and all of the dead over here."

And then looked at the result.

Jurassic WorldJURASSIC WORLD - 2015
Horror Thriller
Universal Pictures
Screenplay: Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Colin Trevorrow, Derek Connolly
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Producer(s): Frank Marshall, Patrick Crowley, Steven Spielberg

From 2011 to 2015 I stopped writing the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHE ALERT.

Month after month and year after year it all just got so damn depressing.

That's not to say that the URCA stopped. Not in the least.

So I took my niece and nephew to JURASSIC WORLD where they got to see... everyone who shares their skin color die.

They are still young kids and asking them how they liked it afterwards? They loved it. They are still at the point where kids are kids and, this being a Stephen Spielberg / Frank Marshall movie, the children live.

That doesn't change the fact that all of the non-white characters with speaking parts die and only white people survive to live happily ever after.

So that's 98 movies and the count continues. All the Schwarzenegger, ALIEN and JURASSIC PARK movies have only white survivors. I'm sure you can think of more but you get the idea. 40 of these movies were released in the first 9 years of the 21st century. And two in the first two months of 2010. Which means that it is getting worse, not better. Can you believe we are still dealing with this crap? It's bad both on a racial level and a storytelling level. Again: this is not to say that plenty of white people/characters didn't die in these movies. What I am saying is that, in a mixed race cast, only the white actors were cast as survivors. The black or minority folk are all cast from the very beginning as corpses.

There are also Horror Thriller movies that don't count because nobody dies, like
THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN - There was a town full of bodies, sure, but not one of the characters dies. Doesn't count if there isn't a body count.
POLTERGEIST - The single minority didn't die. Then again, no one did.
TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE - Real people died on the set, but nobody died within the fictional movie.

Directors that "buck" the trend:
Paul W. S. Anderson (EVENT HORIZON, RESIDENT EVIL, RESIDENT EVIL 2, ALIEN vs PREDATOR) just like you never know when Mr. Anderson is going to actually make a good movie, so you never know just who will survive to the end in his movies. But what Paul does as a Director is not what he does as a Producer when paired with his producing partner, Jeremy Bolt.
John Carpenter (HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, THE THING, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THEY LIVE, MOUTH OF MADNESS, etc.) like Romero, sometimes they will, and sometimes they won't. Carpenter may not always make good movies, but he never takes the lazy way. That said, some of his movies don't even have minorities in them, so they couldn't count one way or the other anyway.
Don Coscarelli's PHANTASM movies, when they do have minority actors their characters don't become automatic victims. Some die, some survive, just like in real life.
Wes Craven's A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series (the two he's responsible for) because everybody dies in those and if they didn't get it in one flick they'll bite it in the next! Of course, that's WHEN Wes Craven had any minorities in his movie at all.
George Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD~, DAWN OF THE DEAD~, and DAY OF THE DEAD~ and all his other movies. Maybe the "minority" will die, maybe they won't. You just never know. Few of his films were made / financed by Hollywood, and none of his first three "Dead" movies were backed by Hollywood. Romero is largely a Hollywood outsider like Coscarelli and Carpenter.
Quentin Tarantino as a director (PULP FICTION, KILL BILL Vol. 1, KILL BILL Vol. 2, DEATH PROOF), has never fallen into the cliché. With all of his success, he remains a Hollywood outsider: He's not even a member of the Director's Guild.
The Warchowski Brothers' MATRIX trilogy never followed the cliché. So 8 directors out of hundreds and most of those are Independent producer/directors who operate outside of the Hollywood nest.

Producers that "buck" the trend:
Perhaps not surprisingly, these producers are racial minorities who both produce and star in their own movies. By calling the shots, they are removing themselves from the UNFAIR RACIAL CLICHÈ as they see fit.
Morgan Freeman: Thrillers include UNDER SUSPICION, ALONG CAME A SPIDER, which he produced and which his production company made.
Wesley Snipes: BLADE, BLADE II, BLADE III. Well come on! You kill BLADE you kill the franchise! D.C. Comics won't fly with that.
M. Night Shyamalan's THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE, and SIGNS didn't kill off the black/minority characters, even when they WERE evil! Perhaps it is because these men are racial minorities and no one at the studios had the gall to enforce the cliché?

Hollywood Movies that "buck" the trend:
13 GHOSTS and not one of them killed off the only "living" black woman, the jive-talking maid.
JACOB'S LADDER: there was no minority body count to be seen. Nearly all of the minority folk, male and female lived. Then again, Carolco, which made JACOB'S LADDER, was never a major Hollywood studio. It was a short-lived independent production company created by two foreign nationals: Mario Kassar from Beirut, Lebanon, and Andrew Vajna from Budapest, Hungary.
SE7EN Not all bad guys are necessarily black.
THE BONE COLLECTOR had various people dying and not because of race, either!
X MEN: Halle Berry is the only good mutant who isn't white. Only the bad mutants get lots of non-whites. Go figure. I think its the same reasoning with The X-Men as with BLADE! You can't kill STORM! No Halle Berry, no box office.
EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING - The movie kills off an entire tribe of black Africans, but they do allow one black child to survive. Am I detecting a loophole here? The movie was also made by two small independent studios, Morgan Creek (Los Angeles based but founder James G. Robinson makes his home in Maryland) and Dominion Productions, a consortium of investors who funded the movie.

Other movies that buck the trend are:
- I dunno, you think that the fact that it was created by a non-white guy (Jeffrey Reddick) and co-wrote by three guys, two of whom are minorities, and directed by an Asian guy (James Wong) is the reason they chose not to kill off all of the minorities? I'm just wondering. Again, perhaps it is because these men are racial minorities that no one at the studios had the gall to enforce the cliché?
THE MUMMY RETURNS - made while Universal Pictures was owned by a Canadian company (Seagrams)
- made by 9 different companies, only one of which was a Hollywood company (Paramount), and seven of which were foreign owned corporations.
and 1408.

If there are exceptions within the Hollywood Race Rule to be made, it will usually be the Horror comedy, which aren't meant to have high body counts regardless of race:
GHOSTBUSTERS, GHOSTBUSTERS 2, HOUSE, HOUSE 2, were total comedies. Black character in GHOSTBUSTERS is a hero.
IDLE HANDS also had the black character as a hero. But yes, high bloody body count.
MARS ATTACKS! Lots of people die, lots of people live. High body count, but survivability was not based on race.
MEN IN BLACK movies were comedies with no horror despite the monsters. BUT- they did have deadly alien monsters. Black character is a hero.
EVOLUTION was meant to be a comedy and it had a deadly alien monster. Nobody is really a hero. This movie also referenced the fact that a RACIAL CLICHÉ existed and that they weren't going to follow it.

So there are exceptions to be sure, 22 to be exact. Raising the number of total Horror Thriller movies with minorities in them to 120. And of that 120, 98 have the URCA (so far). Curiously, this RACIAL CLICHÉ seems to have started in the 1960s: At the same time black / Afro American / Negro etc. people started showing up in Hollywood films in far greater numbers. There were hardly any black people in earlier Horror / Thriller movies. Even episodes of the TWILIGHT ZONE were nearly all white - except in those rare cases where Rod Serling wanted a storyline about minorities kept down by the man. Otherwise he wouldn't hire them.

Some people have commented on some of the large gaps between years of the movies on this list as well as the many Horror/Thriller movies I don't include. Presumably with the suspicion that I am not posting movies that contradict my theory. Obviously that isn't the case, since I clearly DO post those contradictory flicks (DUHHH!). It's just that there are an Awful lot of Horror & Thriller movies that don't even have any racial minorities (as characters) in them at all (ROSEMARY'S BABY, THE EXORCIST, THE OMEN, THE DEVIL'S RAIN, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (both), EVIL DEAD, ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE OTHERS, FROM HELL, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE, THE RING), and in addition, there are an Awful lot of Hollywood made Horror & Thriller movies that I'm sure I haven't seen.

Still ... the list grows.

*References, in the movie, that a "Racial Cliché" exists. It is rumored that L.L. Cool J (HALLOWEEN H20, DEEP BLUE SEA) has a clause in his contracts stating that his character won't die in a Horror/ Thriller/ Monster movie. When asked directly in an interview about that rumor, he laughed and neither confirmed or denied it.
