AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE PRESENTS THE HAUNTED WORLD OF ITALIAN HORROR MAESTRO MARIO BAVA
HOLLYWOOD -The American Cinematheque presents THE HAUNTED WORLD OF MARIO BAVA, the largest US retrospective ever mounted of Italian horror master Mario Bava's films, May 31 - June 12, 2002 (Aw dude! This is awesomely SWEET! -feo). Eighteen of Bava's films will screen, thirteen in new 35 mm prints.

TOM SUTTON DEAD AT 65
Noted horror comics artist Tom Sutton was found dead in his apartment on May 1, 2002, by Massachusetts police. The apparent cause of death was a heart attack. Although he had retired from full time work in the 90's, Sutton continued to devote himself to his art, and some reports indicate the prolific cartoonist was found at his drawing board.

A SHOUT-OUT FOR FRIENDS
Call it despotism or nepotism - both words are incorrect for this usage - but I have this damn site and what's the point of running a website if you can't occasionally give a shout out for friends?

So here's to BRIAN KEENE and the lovely CASSANDRA (Soon to be Cassandra Keene! Poetic in a kooky way, eh?). This couple have fought each other tooth and nail for many years before finally deciding that they actually love each other. This week they're getting married and everyone is going to be there but me. DAMN but I wish I could go, but reality and life dictate otherwise. So here's to the goofy groom and the blushing bride: I want to tell the world that these people live in my heart!

HELLBOY MOVIE GREEN-LIT
In what could be the most faithful comics-to-film adaptation yet, the movie based on Mike Mignola’s HELLBOY comic has been greenlit by Sony-based Revolution Studios and is slated to begin shooting in January in Prague. The film will be directed by Guillermo del Toro (CRONOS, MIMIC, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, BLADE II) from his adaptation of the comic book published by Dark Horse. Ron Perlman (BLADE II) will star as Hellboy, the title character. No other casting has been set at this time. Patrick Palmer, Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Dark Horse's Mike Richardson are producing. According to VARIETY, Todd Garner brought the property to Revolution and topper Joe Roth gave the greenlight to the film.

ILLINOIS TAXES DOG BALLS?
This isn't Horror, exactly, but it sure is odd. Horror writer Dennis Latham (MICHAEL IN HELL) sent me the following:

"I live in Guilford, Indiana. I received my property tax assessment form from the township today. They charge you personal property tax on dogs over and above any license. If your dog has no balls, it costs 2.00 per dog. If your dog has balls, it cost 4.00 per dog. If you get caught lying about the number of dogs and if they have balls, you can be charged with perjury like any criminal case. Of course, the only way you can get caught is if they have a dog ball checker. Since I don't have a dog anymore, I don't know if they have a ball checker, and they never mention female dogs. So now on top of all the other taxes we pay, the people out here have to pay taxes on dog balls."

WHC2002, which happens April 11-14 in Chicago, has a rich variety of activities in store for convention goers including the Gene Wolfe Radio Theater. Writer Larry Santoro has adapted Wolfe's story, "The Tree Is My Hat," and the cast will feature WHC2002 Guest of Honor Neil Gaiman. The production will be done live on the con's Saturday night, April 13, 2002. Wolfe's story was originally published in the award-winning anthology "999" and was reprinted in THE YEAR'S BEST FANTASY & HORROR. [A reminder that membership costs jump April 1. This is an important article for any writer. There are many ways to get published these days, and signing your career away to a scumbag publisher ain't one of them.

Always read your book contract and always cross out anything you disapprove of, or insist on a rewrite. If your publisher should balk, screw 'em! There are plenty of good publisher's out there.

The second full-length Spawn feature film took another significant step toward reality with the recent completion of the script by Todd McFarlane and Steve Niles. The script was approved by co-producer Don Murphy (From Hell, Natural Born Killers) and has been forwarded to executives at Columbia for their approval, which could come as soon as next week.

Today, Cinescape magazine announced the official call for entries for its 2002 Genre Screenplay Competition. The first annual contest was created to encourage aspiring science fiction, fantasy, horror and action-adventure screenwriters, a group typically overlooked by other competitions, to submit their scripts for opportunities to win cash and prizes as well as have their work read by Hollywood professionals.

HOT NEWS FROM CHILLERS
The folks at Urban CHillers report that they have had a manic couple of months as they are shooting the next 25 movies in the series, “Urban Myth Chillers”. They are about half way through shooting the mammoth series and this month sees the production move to Canada to shoot the final 12 episodes. Expect it coming on to the Urban Chillers site and on to a television near you this Fall.

Del and Sue at Dark Delicacies continue to pull in the interesting people. On Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10, they'll be attending Monsters Among Us: Horror & Sci-Fi Convention at the Radisson Hotel in Los Angeles, but the following Saturday, March 16, at 2:00 p.m., they'll be back, welcoming composer John Harrison who will be signing his CD soundtrack for Day of the Dead. On that same day, the Ladies of the Evil Dead, Betsy Baker, Sarah York, along with co-star Hal Delrich, will be signing the two new DVD releases of Evil Dead.
